Computer Networking

Salam...Hello..Bonjour... ^_^

Now you can easily browse the Internet because there are so many networks provided around us. For instance, Wi-Fi. McDonald, Starbucks, and even "kedai mamak" have this. Wireless Internet connection is very easy to be accessed whenever, wherever.

So...today's lesson is....

COMPUTER NETWORKING

Before I let you know what is computer networking, this time, I will not provide every information that I have. Instead, I'll attach few hyperlinks on which you can learn from :) (Spoon feed is not good for university students. :p )

What is computer networking?

Connecting a computer with other computers or other devices that enable them to communicate with each other.

Network can be classified as (some types of network) :

  • LAN (Local Area Network)
  • MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)
  • WAN (Wide Area Network)
  • PAN (Personal Area Network)
Check out here to know their differences and other network types.

Next, network components. Recognize these....?

Every component plays their own role for network communication. Just click on this link and you'l be able to see some of the main network components and learn a little bit about their functions.

I think, almost everyone is using these networks so we know the benefits in our daily tasks, isn't it?

That's it for now! Hope you get something from this post!

I'll be updating more posts soon! Good day all~ :)

How data is transmitted?

Assalamualaikum :)
Good evening all~

So, our interesting topic for today is "Data Transmission". In order for data to be transmitted, it needs to travel over a network. So, we are going to learn in what form it is transmitted, what is the amount of data could travel and what is the type, direction and timing of the transmission.

1. Analog vs. Digital

To make it simpler and easy to be understood, analog is an actual replication of sound wave or image. How it works to produce a continuous wave is (signals-frequency or amplitude, electromagnetic current with given frequency).

Digital transmission convert signals into binary code (two elements 1,0 only). Therefore, the digital format is ideal for digital electronic communication.

2. Bandwidth

The higher the bandwidth, the faster the data is delivered. So simple isn't it? :)

3. Serial vs. Parallel

Serial ---> Data is transmitted bit by bit within a long single path. It is used for a short communication.

Parallel ---> Functions the same- one bit at a time but using different path. Parallel transmission is faster and being used for more telecommunication.

4. Transmission timing

You have to know how data is transmitted synchronously (organised by block) , asynchronously (data with bits specified), and isynchronously (data send at the same time as other data).

5. Transmission directions

Simplex
  • one way communication (travel in single direction)
  • uncommon in computer communication
  • eg : door bell

Half Duplex
  • two way but one direction at a time
  • eg : walkie talkie and USB devices

Full Duplex
  • data travel both direction at a time
  • ideal for hardware devices that need to pass large amount of data
  • eg : telephone, networks and internet connection

6. Circuit Switched, Packet Switched and Broadcast Connections

Circuit Switched
- there's a path that specifically made for data to travel

Packet Switched
- this one plays quite a same function with asynchronous (save into packets)
- data send as individual packet but assemble at recipients destination later

Broadcast Connections
- just like how BBM-broadcast messaging works, the data broadcasts and depends on whether the recipients want to take the data or not

Another thing that you need to know is "Data Compression" which is basically a useful communication because it enables devices to transmit or store the same amount of data in fewer bits.

How was that? Just a brief one? I know. I think that's enough for now.
Till then. Bye~! :D

Computer and communications technology

Assalamualaikum and hello again! :)

Wow. Look at the title. Sound serious, isn't it?
We are going to learn about the elements of computer and communication technology today. So, stay focus. *holding cane*

When you have a computer, you would want to communicate using it beside using it for the purpose of completing your tasks. Therefore, there are five important elements that you need to be aware of (they are only the basics of computer and communication technology). I have simplify the elements into a mind map.

Usually, I'll do mind mapping to get the whole picture of a topic (I learn better through overview not details) but I know I need to explain what is represented by those symbols for your understanding. (I hope it helps.hee~)

Explanation.

1- People (the chocolate coloured 'orang lidi' on top left)
Of course it is the most important element because humans are the ones who are being the user, develop the procedure, software or hardware, and do the operating. There are two categories of people. They are professional and end users. Professional user is basically a person with official training while end user is the one who uses computer for personal.

2- Procedure
It is basically an ordered set of tasks for performing some actions. It provides a clear specification for the sequence, timing, execution, etc of a process.

3- Data
From I've leant, data is code represented by some electromagnetic energy- electricity, radio waves, lights that are transmitted through a medium. It is mostly in a digital form and can represent facts, concepts or instruction that can be interpreted or processed. The data is stored on the computer system. The unit for data is bit, byte, kilobyte etc.

4- Hardware
Hardware can be defined as the physical objects that are part of the computer system. It is a part of basic operations of a computer system, IPOS. But now the basic operations of a computer system has become IPOSC which is including communication.

5- Sotware
It refers to the instructions that controls the functioning of the computer. There are 2 types of software which are Operating System (OS) and application software.

These are the basic information before we go further into the complicated telecommunication and networking. *evil look*
So...see you here again? :D
